Supervision is a supportive and collaborative process. It involves a structured meeting with a qualified colleague to review a task, piece of work or interaction with a client or clients and on which the person being supervised would value feedback and insight. In TA, supervision is an integral part of both the learning process and the practice of qualified TA practitioners.
Regular supervision builds confidence, enhances the formal learning process, and offers a method for teasing out the key issues, identifying solutions to challenging interpersonal and professional interactions, addressing misunderstandings or gaps in theoretical knowledge, and facilitating the process of identifying ethical and best practice. “Supervision is a working alliance between two professionals, (supervisor and supervisee) where the supervisee offers an account of his/her work, reflects on it, receives feedback and guidance, if appropriate. The object of this alliance is to enable the supervisee to gain in ethical competency, confidence and creativity, so as to give the best possible service to clients.” (Inskipp & Proctor 1993 Making the Most of Supervision Cascade pubs, Twickenham, Middlesex)
TA supervision works within a contractual framework. The learning needs are identified and contracted for and the supervisor works with the supervisee to achieve an outcome that will facilitate growth and change.
As part of the CDTA, DDTA, CTA & PTSTA training, students are required to have a certain number of hours’ supervision.
I have found supervision a vital part of understanding myself and my interactions with others. It is wonderful to experience support, challenge and encouragement from my supervisor for both my personal and professional journey. I can totally recommend it!
