What is Transactional Analysis (TA)?

TA is:

The theories of Transactional Analysis were first developed by Eric Berne, a
Canadian who became a US citizen.

He wrote a number of books, the first was published in 1947 and the last in 1971.

The philosophical bases for TA include:

TA is practiced as part of a contractual arrangement.  Its aim is to assist us to become more aware, spontaneous and capable of intimacy; i.e. more integrated (within ourselves), and autonomous (in relating to others).  It holds that everyone is “essentially OK" and capable of learning to think, feel and behave in satisfying ways.  The TA model of ego states (Parent, Child, Adult), helps us understand those behaviours, thoughts and feelings.

TA can be extended to give us a method of analysing systems and organisations, understanding what might be contributing to unhelpful relationships and ways of communicating clearly.  This is why it is so useful for those working in organisations and education as well as those people providing counselling and psychotherapy.

A reference section is provided for those of you wanting more information about TA or you could attend one of the training courses being made available.

all people are OK as human beings, even though their behaviour may be unacceptable
people have an urge to grow and develop themselves, even though they may have learned to repress this
we make decisions and are therefore responsible for our behaviour.  We can influence others and invite  certain responses but they decide how to react (although it is unfair to condemn them for this if they have not been exposed to TA philosophy!)
